Grotte Del Caglieron

The Caglieron Caves are at short distance from Vittorio Veneto. From Vittorio Veneto, take the road towards Cansiglio, where the grottoes are soon signposted. After about 10 minutes you will reach a large car park near the entrance.

It is a well-maintained magical place, with waterfalls and lush vegetation and accessible via paths and bridges. The caves have a unique atmosphere, awe-inspiring and mysterious. As the caves are little known you will not have to share this wonderful experience with large crowds.

Walking, cheese and stones

The path that runs along running water is fascinating, with living rocks and lush vegetation. Cave di S. Lucio is responsible for the maturing of the Agricansiglio ‘Grotte del Caglieron’ cheese, that can be purchased at the Info Point. You should really buy this cheese.

The natural area is a narrow gorge. It was formed by the river Caglieron whose water caused abrasion to the layers of rock and sediment. This is where the extraction of sandstone, called “Dolza” stone, took place. It was an important source of employment for the area. The stone quarried here can still be seen on the windows of houses near Vittorio Veneto. The artificial caves can be recognised by the 45° inclined columns supporting the roof. This type of technique was intended to prevent any problems.

After passing the caves and walking across the wooden walkways, you will come to a water mill. The mill has been renovated and serves as a restaurant. Continuing along the path from the lodges, you will come to craft houses. These have also been restored and are now used for exhibitions.

Guided tour

If this is your visit to the caves, take a guided walk. The tour, which costs just €3.50, lasts about an hour. During the walk, you will get a detailed explanation and get the answers to all the questions that would otherwise remain a mystery. For more information, times and to book, visit the Alpago Cansiglio info point. This is a very popular route. In summer, you can enjoy the fresh air sliding between the rocks. And in winter to admire the brutal icefalls forming on the rocks.

You can visit PARCO GROTTE DEL CAGLIERON at any time, as they are open all year round.
